As you may have read in our last update, Clayton has been in the hospital for severe back, hip and leg pain for 14 days now while we try to figure out the source of the pain and how best to alleviate it. He was originally supposed to have a vertebroplasty (technically he ended up having a kyphoplasty because of the location of the fracture) on Monday the 23rd, but because of some emergency surgeries that came in, he ended up having it on Tuesday. The surgery’s goal was to inject cement into his L4 because of the fracture, and they also decided to do his L5, in the hopes that it would alleviate some of the radiating pain he was having in his back and down his legs. They were unable to sedate him during the procedure as they expected, so Clayton was coherent and felt a lot of what was happening. The Interventional Radiologist said Clayton’s bones were the hardest he had ever seen, making the drilling and tunneling for the cement extremely difficult to achieve. Obviously this caused a lot of pain and trauma to his body. Unfortunately, the procedure hasn’t yet given us the results we were hoping for, so Clayton is still in the hospital recovering. We are working with the palliative care team and doctors to relieve the trauma, swelling etc from the procedure. Please be praying for wisdom for us as we continue to make decisions on how to move forward. It’s hard not to be disappointed and discouraged after 14 days. Pray for Clayton’s pain to be brought under control and that he could go home and back to living day to day life with us. We know God is the ultimate Healer and that He is in control, so we’re asking for his mercy in this.
