Update!
It has been a few weeks since we sent out an update and thought we were starting treatment. Needless to say, that did not happen when we originally thought. We’ve had to put treatment on hold over the past 2 weeks while we wait for Clayton’s port to heal a little more (he had a hematoma underneath that his body needed to absorb so his port could be accessed). He also needed to have the MRI have his lumbar to see what has been causing him pain, especially at night. He has not been sleeping a lot of nights, some nights not more than a couple of hours because of the pain. So honestly we were a little nervous about what the MRI would show. BUT God. We got news that gave us the ability to take a really big, needed, deep breath. The MRI came back and Dr. Shalaby feels pretty certain that the spot on his spine is NOT cancer. He went back and looked at his PET scan from last summer and can actually see it there, and after talking with another doctor, they believe it is more along the lines of a slipped disc along with bone loss! Such a huge relief!! He obviously said he can’t say 100% without seeing how it responds to the chemo and looking at it again on a scan, but he doesn’t think for now that it is cancer. He also doesn’t think the pain is related to any new spots either. He thinks it’s related more to digestion and maybe nerve pain from his colostomy bag that we are now working towards an elimination diet to see what we can do to ease the discomfort as best as we can. After reading and learning more, it is not uncommon to see people with colostomy bags hospitalized with pain sometimes, so even though that is a new learning curve, we are SO thankful it is not pain from cancer!! We will still however, do chemo because his CEA numbers have been rising which means there is growth somewhere, most likely in the spots we have already known about. And we were ALSO able to start treatment today! We started a couple hours late because we weren’t sure the port was going to cooperate, 😅 but after seeing Dr. Baucom and her using a sizable amount of glue to seal that incision back up, we were able to start! That is also a HUGE praise! It has been hard to wait for that, and we are so thankful to get the ball rolling on working towards getting rid of the cancer again. I know I say it on every update, but your prayers truly mean so much to us. We are just so thankful to have each of you. ❤️
